I am very into improving my thought process when I play. I perceive this to be the most important aspect of improvement after you understand the basics. Do others out there share this view? I have read the stuff by Heisman online and have taken his ideas plus some from other sources and tried to make my own thought algorithm, with mixed results. Does anyone else out there put much emphasis on this aspect of the game? I am interested to hear your thoughts.

Interesting topic, 3 things hit me quickly: 1) changing how one thinks seems very difficult  2) knowing how one thinks takes careful arrival, ideally by....who?  3) Learning the basics and beyond is the straightforward part, but how can we adapt to knowledge and application creep across time?  Recently at a tournament, I was browsing through some of the many chess psychology books that Thad had, these books revealed common themes and some variance of perspective on the topics.

Anyone interested in having a lecture (at the club) by someone knowledgable (or prepared) on Thought Process or Chess Psychology?

Hey,

This does sound like an interesting topic.  I'm not sure who we could approach as an expert in this area.  I know for the Fall series, which we are currently looking at a five week series, is going to be based around Openings.  However, if we can find someone who is good at this topic, we might be able to add them as a sixth or use him in the next series.

Thanks,
~charlie

I can't seem to follow my own created algorithm with any kind of consistency!  It is frustrating!

It is like that Zen thing when they tell you to empty your mind (not to think) and you find your mind jumping all over the place.  Then it is like ok so that was your first lesson:  namely, that your mind is like a dancing monkey jumping around from thought to thought...ok, but where do I go from there.  In this sense I conceptualize trying to follow my algorithm to meditation.  But no matter what I can't seem to follow it even though I find I pay the price (early loss to Mike Kliber in the first 10-15 moves is a recent example)...

I have been playing a lot of blitz lately (since I don't get to play on Tue nights) and I find that with simple BLUNDER checks performed befor every move I cut down my mistakes/losses considerably!
